1. UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFIT
Unemployment Benefit (UEB) can be payable where a person, who has not reached the age of 65, is Terminated/Temporarily Laid Off. Unemployment Benefit is payable only to employed persons.
Benefit Entitlement & Duration
Unemployment Benefit is paid at a rate of 50% of the qualifying claimant’s average insured income. Unemployment Benefit is payable for up to 13 weeks but should you return to work at any point in the 13 weeks, the benefit will cease.
Qualifying Conditions:
1. You must be able to satisfy the Department of Labour that you are –
a. capable of work (working legally in the country); and
b. available to work.
2. You must have paid at least 52 contributions overall; and
3. You must have paid and/or been credited with at least:
13 contributions in the 26 contribution weeks immediately preceding the first day that the continuous period of unemployment began; and 7 contributions in the 13 contribution weeks immediately preceding the first day that the continuous period of unemployment began.
How to apply online
Applicants applying for the National Insurance Board’s Unemployment Benefit (UEB), must complete the following
Claim for Unemployment Benefit (Form B.82).
To complete the Form B.82 online please follow these instructions if you are using a laptop or desktop:
• On your computer download and install Adobe Acrobat Reader

• Save the Form B.82 to your desktop
• Open the Form B.82 with Adobe Acrobat Reader and fill out the form

2. SICKNESS BENEFIT
Sickness Benefit can be payable when a worker is rendered (temporarily) “incapable of work as a result of a specified disease or physical or mental disablement...”
The National Insurance Act & Regulations also provides for the payment of Sickness Benefit when a worker is quarantined - i.e., when he is “required to abstain from work because he is under observation by reason of being a carrier, or his having been in contact with a case of an infectious disease”. COVID-19 is a specified disease; therefore, persons who contract the disease or have to be quarantined are eligible for Sickness Benefit.
Benefit Entitlement and Duration
Sickness Benefit is paid at a rate of 60% of the qualifying worker’s average insured income. COVID-19, like every other disease, has a morbidity period that governs duration of payments. A morbidity period is a medically determined and internationally accepted median time from onset of symptoms to clinical recovery. Sickness Benefit, therefore, will be paid in accordance with the accepted medical guidelines.
The quarantine or observation period for COVID-19 is 14 days. Sickness Benefit in this regard can, therefore, be paid for up to 14 days. If at any point during quarantine, it is confirmed that you contracted COVID-19, the quarantine benefit period will end and a new benefit period will begin.
Qualifying Conditions:
1. You must have been employed on the day of or the day before the illness began; and
2. You must be able to satisfy the following contribution conditions:
(a) You must have paid at least 40 contributions overall; and
(b) You must have paid and/or been credited with at least:
(i) 13 contributions in the 26 weeks immediately before the week the illness started; or
(ii) 26 contributions in the 52 weeks before the week the illness started; or
(iii) 26 contributions in the Contribution Year immediately preceding the Contribution Year in which the illness started.
How to apply
1. A Certified Medical Practitioner must complete and sign the Form Med 1 (Medical Certificate of Incapacity) which is usually at the doctor’s office; you must also complete the sections that apply to you and also sign the form. Med 1 for Sickness OR Injury
2 Your employer must complete the Form Med 4 Med 4 Employer’s Certificate
The completed forms can be emailed to customerservice@nib-bahamas.com.
Note: The time-limit for the submission of claims for Sickness Benefit is three months from the date of entitlement
Employers are urged to sign up for the Employer Self Service portal (ESS portal), by emailing your request to ess@nib-bahamas.com to be guided through the set-up process. You will be able to submit your contribution statements (C10 forms) and pay through this portal.
Employers not registered via the ESS portal may submit their contribution statements (C-10) to contributions@nibbahamas.com.
The following payment options are available:
• Payment by CREDIT CARD via Employer Self Service Portal (ESS)
• Payment by CHEQUE by drop box at NIB offices
• Payment THROUGH RBC using “Pay Bill” option
